Volunteering with the Speed Freaks

Are you passionate about exercise and running and keen to share this with others? This is how we create Speed Freaks Magic!
We have volunteer coach opportunities in Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland), Ōtautahi (Christchurch), Whangārei and Taranaki.

Our programmes are primarily delivered by groups of community volunteers who are passionate about exercise and running. Our volunteer coach led running and walking programmes operate in residential and community settings, with additional support provided by Speed Freaks staff as needed.

Volunteer coaches come from diverse backgrounds, but all share the joy of running and role model pro social, positive and healthy lifestyles. No running coaching experience is needed, we provide all the required training.

Our recruitment process includes an interview, police check, training, and shadowing local groups.

You will need to be able to commit to volunteering at least fortnightly for 60 mins, and to attend the required online training and initial shadowing.

Some of our sessions are predominately walking, others involve a hybrid of running and walking, as we encourage our participants to intentionally exercise. When we support people to participate in running events, entrants cover distances from 5 km to ultra marathons.

Yes, all volunteers must attend online training for new coaches. Additional training is available on a monthly basis, and although it’s optional, we encourage coaches to attend this.

‘It’s fun. We do all the good stuff, from sunny mornings at park run to muddy spring trail runs, coffees after a session  and crazy Christmas Party BBQs and relays.’

‘People are really nice to me in my blue shirt. Even when I’m running on my own at an event people connect, encourage and support.’

‘It lets me model to my kids that we all need to be part of creating the community we want to live in.’

‘It gets me out of my bubble. We all tend to live, work and socialize with people who have very similar lives as us. Speed Freaks gets me out of that rut and reminds me that there are a whole lot of perspectives, cultures, age groups and life experiences.’

‘No matter how blah I feel when I leave the house, getting out with a bunch of people who are working to turn their lives around puts a smile on my face by the time I get home and puts my minor gripes right back in perspective.’
